Property taxes in Syosset: due dates, penalties and grievances

Syosset taxes are billed by the Town of Oyster Bay Receiver of Taxes, which handles more than 100,000 parcels. The Receiver of Taxes collects State, County, Town, special district and school district taxes based on budgets that the respective municipal authorities adopt. Each bill carries a 40-day penalty-free period between the due date and the penalty date. The school tax bill is mailed in October and the general tax bill in January; with a mortgage escrow account, the bills go straight to the lender. The tax office has two locations, Town Hall North at 74 Audrey Avenue in Oyster Bay and Town Hall South at 977 Hicksville Road in Massapequa, with business hours of 9:00 am to 4:45 pm, Monday through Friday.

General tax, second half July 1 August 10
School tax, first half October 1 November 10
School tax, second half April 1 May 10

Missing the last day without penalty costs 1% per month, charged retroactively to the original due date. The collection period ends May 31 for school taxes and August 31 for general taxes, after which taxes in arrears are payable to the Nassau County Treasurer.

Taxpayers have the right to file a grievance about their property’s assessed value. Grievances go to the Nassau County Assessment Review Commission. The 2026 window closed March 31, 2026, after the County extended it. The Town’s page gives the usual grievance period as January 2 to March 1. The next opportunity to file follows the County’s next tentative assessment roll.

New owners register for the STAR credit with the NYS Tax Department as soon as the home becomes their primary residence, and the Basic or Enhanced credit follows from what they qualify for. The STAR exemption is closed to new applicants: owners who have received it since 2015 keep it on the same primary residence. The Basic STAR credit has a $500,000 income limit, and the benefit is based on the first $30,000 of a home’s full value. Enhanced STAR gives seniors aged 65 and older a larger benefit, with an income limit of $110,750 for the 2026-2027 school year. The property must be the primary residence of an eligible owner.
