Village government and history

Bayville is a village located in the Town of Oyster Bay in Nassau County. It incorporated as a village in 1919, during the incorporated village movement, which let larger estate owners establish political and security control over their domains. Winslow S. Pierce was elected its first mayor. The village has a total area of 1.5 square miles, of which 1.4 are land and 0.1 are water, or 3.42%. Daniel Whitehead bought the land from the tribes in 1658, Oak Neck was renamed Bayville in 1859, and a drawbridge connected Bayville and Mill Neck in 1898. The Bayville Fire Department was created after fires destroyed the Arlington Hotel, the Bayville Casino and the Ritzmore Estate. Its historic development included the Oak Neck area and other waterfront tracts along Long Island Sound.

Village Hall is at 34 School Street, Bayville, NY 11709, and its phone line is (516) 628-1439. Its office hours are Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.. The village and town halls guide lists the other offices you will deal with.

How property taxes work in Bayville

Bayville homeowners pay two sets of bills. The village bills its own: the second half of the village tax was due January 2, 2026. Payments can be made at Village Hall, 34 School Street. The village’s second-half tax notice also allows payment by mail.

The Town of Oyster Bay Receiver of Taxes bills property taxes on more than 100,000 parcels in the Town. The office acts as a collection agency for State, County, Town, special district and school district taxes.

Town bill First half due Second half due
General tax January 1; no penalty until February 10 July 1; no penalty until August 10
School tax October 1; no penalty until November 10 April 1; no penalty until May 10

There is a 40-day penalty-free period between the due date and the penalty date. Miss the last penalty-free day and the charge is 1% per month, retroactive to the original due date. After the collection period ends, on May 31 for school taxes and August 31 for general taxes, unpaid taxes are payable to the Nassau County Treasurer in Mineola. The Receiver’s frequently asked questions page carries these rules.

Taxpayers have the right to file a grievance on their property’s assessed value. Grievances go to the Nassau County Assessment Review Commission. The 2026 window closed March 31, 2026, after the County extended it. The Town’s page gives the usual grievance period as January 2 to March 1. The next opportunity to file follows the County’s next tentative assessment roll. New owners should register for STAR school tax relief as soon as the home becomes their primary residence. Basic STAR has a $500,000 income limit for the credit and $250,000 for the exemption, and its benefit is based on the first $30,000 of a home’s full value. The property must be the primary residence of an eligible owner. For county-wide mechanics, see Nassau County property taxes.
