Property taxes and STAR in East Hills

Most of East Hills is in the Town of North Hempstead, so most tax bills come from that town’s Receiver of Taxes, which bills and collects all Town, County, School and Special District taxes. The Town of North Hempstead’s home page lists the first half of the 2026-2027 school tax as due November 10. A small portion lies in the Town of Oyster Bay, whose Receiver of Taxes bills more than 100,000 parcels and collects State, County, Town, special district and school district taxes.

New owners register for the STAR credit with the NYS Tax Department as soon as the home becomes their primary residence, and the Basic or Enhanced credit follows from what they qualify for. The STAR exemption is closed to new applicants: owners who have received it since 2015 keep it on the same primary residence. Basic STAR covers owner-occupied primary residences. Its credit has a $500,000 income limit, and the benefit is based on the first $30,000 of a home’s full value. Enhanced STAR gives seniors aged 65 and older a larger benefit, with an income limit of $110,750 for the 2026-2027 school year. The property must be the primary residence of an eligible owner. For county-wide mechanics, see Nassau County property taxes.

The post-war boom brought many new developments. Levitt & Sons built Strathmore in the late 1940s, and the Country Estates subdivision went up over Clarence Mackay’s former estate. The village gained its Town of Oyster Bay portion, 16 acres, from Brookville between the 1960 and 1970 censuses.

Village government, history and parks

The Village of East Hills was incorporated on June 24, 1931. Reasons for incorporating included a wish by many locals to be excluded from paying for sanitary sewer systems and highways. In 1949 the village annexed all of its present territory south of the Long Island Expressway. The portions of East Hills inside the Town of North Hempstead lie in its 2nd council district. As of April 2026, the mayor is Michael R. Koblenz, who has held the post since 1995.

The Park at East Hills opened on Labor Day 2006 on land that the Roslyn Air National Guard Station had occupied. It has a pool, nature walks, senior and fitness facilities, and tennis, pickleball and basketball courts. Clarence and Katherine Mackay settled in East Hills in 1898 and later commissioned the Harbor Hill mansion. Three buildings left from the Harbor Hill estate were listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1991. The Park at East Hills was financed through the sale of bonds.
