Schools: Roslyn and North Shore districts

Greenvale is split between the Roslyn Union Free School District and the North Shore Central School District. Most of the hamlet is within the Roslyn School District. The district boundary inside the hamlet follows the North Hempstead–Oyster Bay town line. Library service follows the same split: the Bryant Library in Roslyn serves the Roslyn portion and the Gold Coast Public Library in Glen Head serves the North Shore portion. Property taxes: two towns, two tax offices

Greenvale is located mainly within the Town of North Hempstead, while a small portion is in the Town of Oyster Bay. The Town of North Hempstead’s Office of the Receiver of Taxes bills and collects all Town, County, School and Special District taxes within the town. The town lists the first half of the 2026-2027 school tax as due November 10.

The Oyster Bay Receiver of Taxes handles the billing of property taxes on more than 100,000 parcels in that town. It acts as a collection agency for State, County, Town, special district and school district taxes. For county-wide mechanics, see Nassau County property taxes.

New owners register for the STAR credit with the NYS Tax Department as soon as the home becomes their primary residence, and the Basic or Enhanced credit follows from what they qualify for. The STAR exemption is closed to new applicants: owners who have received it since 2015 keep it on the same primary residence. The home must be the primary residence of an eligible owner. The Basic STAR credit has a $500,000 income limit, and the benefit is based on the first $30,000 of a home’s full value. Enhanced STAR gives owners 65 and older a larger benefit, with an income limit of $110,750 for the 2026-2027 school year.

Septic systems, water and trash

No sanitary sewer system serves Greenvale, and all homes and businesses in the hamlet rely on cesspools and septic systems.

The Jericho Water District serves the portions in the Town of Oyster Bay, while the Roslyn Water District serves the North Hempstead portions. The hamlet is within the Hempstead Harbor Watershed. Trash collection is provided by Meadow Carting on behalf of the Roslyn Garbage District, which covers the whole hamlet. PSEG Long Island provides power to all homes and businesses, and National Grid provides gas to buildings hooked up to gas lines.

Commuting from Greenvale by LIRR

The Greenvale station on the Oyster Bay Branch is partially located within the hamlet, directly on the Greenvale–Roslyn Harbor border. Located between Roslyn and Brookville, it is the LIRR stop for the C.W. Post Campus of LIU and NYIT. The branch splits from the Main Line just east of Mineola and runs north and east to Oyster Bay.

West of Mineola, most trains originate or terminate at Jamaica. Once on the branch, all trains run local except for one westbound rush-hour skip-stop service. The branch opened in segments between 1865 and 1889. The MTA’s printed timetable points riders to the TrainTime app or a City Terminal Zone timetable for all transfer options. See the LIRR Oyster Bay Branch guide for service patterns.

Landmarks and government

Northern Boulevard (NY 25A) is the one state-owned road through the hamlet. The n20H bus runs west to east along Northern Boulevard and the n27 runs north to south along Glen Cove Road, both operated by Nassau Inter-County Express.

The historic Roslyn East Gate Toll House, built for the North Hempstead Turnpike, has been on the National Register of Historic Places since August 16, 1977. It stands inside the Roslyn Cemetery, which is also on the Register. The community was known as “Cedar Swamp” until 1866. The Greenvale Post Office was established in 1933 and moved to its current location in 1976. LIU Post sits in Brookville but uses the Greenvale 11548 ZIP and the Greenvale Post Office. The 1940s and 1950s brought development next to the Roslyn Cemetery and the LIRR tracks, including Park Avenue and Wellington Road. Because the hamlet is unincorporated, the two towns govern it directly. The parts in the Town of North Hempstead are in that town’s 2nd council district.
